Program Overview

The Space Generation Congress (SGC) is the annual meeting of Space Generation, where we welcome new members to help us create new possibilities for the space community.

SGC is not a typical conference or workshop. Instead of listening to a series of presentations, delegates are fully involved, working together to create the outcomes of the conference. The program centers around two ideas: collecting the ideas of youth to be presented to the wider space community, and giving delegates something concrete to work on. This year delegates will be able to participate first hand in some of the Space Generations finest projects, including Yuri's Night, and the MoonMars Workshop. Special key note speakers presented throughout the program to add key ideas along the way.

Hiroki Tajima, SGC 2004 delegate from Japan.

At SGC many youth leaders of the space sector got together from all over the world, and we could share information and learn from each other. Now I want to share the skills and knowledge I learnt at SGC to space youth groups in Japan.

Hiroki Tajima, Law and Policy Student, Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Tokyo

The program has two parts: general sessions and elective projects. All delegates will participate in the general sessions, and each delegate will choose one elective project to work on.

General Sessions

The SGC program contains a number of general sessions where all delegates meet together to express their collected views for the development of space. Through these general sessions the Space Generation will make an active contribution to the space industry and community. Outputs of the general sessions include enhancing the worldwide operations of the SGAC and providing input to the United Nations Action Teams on Space Applications. These are the core activities of the SGAC, and through them the voice of the youth can be heard. All delegates are asked to contribute to the general session disucssions prior to SGC, so go to the discussion forums and make your views heard!

Space Generation Projects

Each delegate will be involved in creating new and expanding existing projects led by the Space Generation. Delegates will choose the direction of each of these projects themselves by participating in online discussions before the Congress. See the full list of projects for more information.

Before the Congress

Delegates will participate in online discussions to

  1. Contribute their views and efforts to the general activities of the congress
  2. Begin work in earnest on their chosen project.

By performing a significant amount of work before the congress delegates can make the best use of their time together in Japan. To place an emphasis on this, participation in the online discussions is compulsorary, and all delegates will be assessed on their level of contribution. If you are applying for a scholarship, a high level of participation is necessary for your application to be successful.

It is imporant in this stage to do the following:

Careful attention to these issues before coming will make your SGC experience invaluable.

During the SGC

Since a lot of the work will be done before hand, the time together at SGC is best spent having face-to-face conversations, making the hard decisions that can't be made online. Meet the people you are going to work with in the future, get to know them, and most of all, have fun. In all of your future space endeavours, these might be your closest allies.

Some projects already have defined outcomes to be delivered during the SGC program and for others it up to you. Whatever you decide, your project should aim to make some valuable contribution to the SGC proceedings.

During IAC

When the SGC weekend is finished, you then have a chance to attend the IAC and meet professionals who can help you in your personal work and with your SGC projects. Make the most of this time and establish your future industry contacts.

After the Congress

When you get home, have a rest. You'll have earn't it! But of course, the SGC program doesn't stop at that point and you'll still be able to work on your projects. Most of the projects are designed to carry through the whole year, and it is our hope that we will see you again in Spain for SGC 2006.

Papers

SGC has submitted a number of papers to the IAC. See the full paper list.
